Guiding Light's bad seed-turning-loving dad Jonathan paid a short visit to Springfield, where portrayer Tom Pelphrey hit the mother lode.
When Jonathan surprised Reva in the Cedars stairwell, Pelphrey's familiar, wry grin telegraphed, "I'm home!"" He punctuated that with a theatrical eye roll as Jonathan confided that baby Sarah was "drvin' her old man crazy." Jonathan comforted Reva by cheekily offering to smack Josh and Cassie" upside the head." Pelphrey then replaced the humor in Jonathan's eye with grin regret over deceiving Lizzie. Witha sheen of tears, he kissed Reva on the nose before sending her back to Dylan's bedside.
But affection vanished when Jonathan came face-to-face with Olivia, who threatened to expose his ruse. First, pinning her against a wall and then shrugging off her hug. Pelphrey tilted his head and eyed his character's aunt dispassionately. He coolly noted that while "nobody's had to die" to keep his secret, "that can change." But then he warmly hugged a weeping Olivia.
Last, Pelphrey boisterously swept Stephanie Gatschet's Tammy into his arms- only to dissolve into a stricken stare when the illusion vanished. When Reva arrived, Pelphrey clutched Kim Zimmer before Jonathan admitted he'd almost forgotten Tammy's smile. Pelphrey broke up Jon's confession with quiet sighs and shrugs before reverting to the volatile Jonathan. "it's not getting even, it's about my daughter," he cried, resolving to "take care" of a blackmailing Olivia. A hint of tears became a near-hysterical sob as Jonathan feared losing Sarah like he'd lost Tammy.
Jonathan bid his mother goodbye with a kiss and a tender reminder to bring Tammy daisies, but he knew he was tearing his family apart - the same way Pelphrey was putting together an amazing performance.
